Hi,

Maybe I'm getting a bit carried away with this, but Karl's mention of a safety catch made me think of a using a hood latch (say from a rabbit) to secure the swing down panel. That way it could be cable operated from inside the van, and from the outside, there would be no clue that it even opened. Heck, you could even use the front 1/3 of a rabbit hood, and only have to fabricate the hinges and mount the 'receiver' for the hood latch under the sliding door.

Like I said maybe I'm getting a bit carried away...

have fun
