This is for venting out the interior, the 88-91 models got the plastic vent inserts in the rear windows instead.

The duct inside the door is for bringing fresh air to the roof vents.

No, they are separate. The vent in the door is for venting out the interior (holes are in the door gap up front, a vacuum is formed when the car gets up to speed) while the duct goes sligthly above the grille.
