I have one of these "stinger", with a Scirocco 16V underneath it.

Due to the distribtor's high-up location in the engine compartment of the 16V engine, the antenna had to be moved to avoid ignition-pulse induced noise. It initially signified having a 16V engine, but cought on as a kewl appearance item.

These are amplified antennas to help make up for the long cable to the front of the car. A 12V power wire is run to the base along with the signal cable. Fuba makes most of them.

Typically, the amplifier in the base will fail, necessitating headliner work as well. And the cost of the replacement is relatively high. Mine needs replacing, sigh.

But, it do look cool.
