IMHO even in a temperate climate mounting a spare tire in front of the radiator would be a total disaster. I live in a temperate climate north of San Francisco and I have seen 100 + degrees many, many times and believe me the fan comes on a lot. The cooling system is one of the weak points of the water cooled vanagons... and blocking airflow with a spare tire would be an unmitigated disaster...
