I have got to disagree on the cooling system being a weak point in the
Vanagon.  You have over four gallons of coolant, twice the amount usual
for an engine this size, and a radiator twice the size typically found
in four cylinder engine cars.  Last summer I drove in eastern Washington
a couple of days in 100+ degree heat with only a slight rise in the temp
gauge. The fan only came on briefly when stopped in traffic, and the
temp immediately dropped.

The spare tire in front is probably not the best idea, but then I don't
have A/C, and the A/C exchanger mounted in front of the radiator could
certainly have an effect on this.  Still, you might need one of the Bus
Depot's $180 radiators along with a t-stat!
