Subject: Persuaded to use 915
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

Well, after all the agonizing about the Getrag G50, I've been persuaded, by folks on the list, by Hobert Kennedy and by a Wellington Porsche specialist, to use my 915.

If it blows I'll send part of the bill for subsequent conversion to G50 to everyone who suggested I use the 915.

Seriously, John Pollinger of Powerhaus in Wellington at first said that the 915 would give trouble eventually; they are weak in the synchro rings, shaft bearings and engagement dogs. However when he realized it won't be attached to a 350hp engine he said to use it. So I give in. At least the Caravelle will be on the road much sooner, and more cheaply.

On the shift-pattern front, John assured me that all 915s have a normal pattern; only the 901 had first to left & back. That's good for me. My posting mentioning that maybe 915s came with both shift-patterns was based on other people's messages; I am basically ignorant of Porsche details (but learning!).

John did tell me that the G50 nosecone will NOT fit the 915.

He also said that all short G50s are modified from originally long-bellhousing units, normally for retrofitting to earlier 911s in USA.

My thanks to all those who gave advice on transmissions.

Andrew
