OK, this is a bit of a rambler, and you'll need an atlas to I drove up to alaska a few years back. I think someone else said to take "Mileposts", the Alaskan guidebook. Great reference.

A really cool highway to take on the way up there is the Cassiar highway through canada. Take I-5 north through washington, but when you get to bellingham, head northeast to the sumas border crossing. Go up through interior BC until Prince George (?) where you start west on the yellowknife highway. Somewhere along there you'll see the worlds largest fly fishing rod. Unbelievable. Eventually you'll reach the beginning of the cassiar. Beautiful, beautiful, unbelievable country. The road is unpaved for portions, making for a real rustic feel (As are portions of the Al/Can Highway). Support is minimal, so pick up gas and check your oil/fluids at every stop. I did it solo, but it would be great with family. Bring a kayak or canoe and pop into roadside lakes along the way. If you're going into interior Alaska in the summer, bring plenty of bug repelling products (i.e. spray, protective clothing, etc..) because the mosquitos come out in full force.

Have fun

I popped up an idea of going up to Alaska in my 88 Weekender (or Westfalia if I find one) with my wife and two kids during the summer from Southern California. Any suggestion or recommendation on the Alaska trip, dates. sightseeings, stopovers, campgrounds etc??? Thanks for your input...
