This is merely anecdotal: Years ago, the older brother of a friend of mine was confronted with the same problem. He claimed his solution to his predicament was to run the car as low on fuel as he dare, then dump a bunch of dry gas into the tank before taking it in to be tested again.

But, as Dick Nixon once said," Of course, that would be wrong."
