Jeanne, Have you thought about instead of taking spare parts for your vanagon, you can drive a 70's bus, and almost all parts should be available in South America. It's a well-known fact that the vanagon is a unique vehicle, which was never introduced in South America. If I were to go, I would drive a good late 70's bus converted to a 1600 upright Brazilian engine, and then I'd take a good backpack and be emotionally and financially prepared to abandon the vehicle and travel on. Just my 2 cents.
