Subject: Vanagon keys--the answers
Hi, everybody. Here's the whole story on Vanagon keys, as far as I know,
and corroborated by all my locksmithing materials. All Vanagons used 1 key
for ignition and all doors. There is a separate key (single sided) for the
glove box. There is a small double sided key for gas cap, except syncros
that use the ignition key. There is NOT a valet key option. All locks can
be rekeyed to match. except for the gas cap. Once they are assembled, they
cannot be disassembled for rekeying. This applies to both the 2 and 4 wheel
drive models.
I have gotten more of the rubber-headed keys in. These are as close to the
originals as I can find, but the do not have the VW logo. To my knowledge,
there is not a logo style key available. I am working with an offshore
manufacturer to see if we can do a special run of logo keys, but it does not
look promising due to VW's current stand on the use of their name and logo.
I also stock a generic plated brass key for Vanagon, as well as the glove
box key, gas cap key, and early style water inlet key for the Westys.
I'm not trying to turn this into an ad, but there have been requests for
pricing, so here goes:
Cut key to code $11.75 ignition
Cut key to code $11.50 glove box
Cut plastic head key to code $12.75
Duplicate standard ignition key $3.75
Duplicate plastic head ign. key $4.75
Duplicate gas key $3.00
Duplicate water tank key $3.75
Rekey lock $12.00 for first, $10 for each additional keyed alike
These prices will be good until the end of May. I've been told to expect a
price increase on key blanks, so I will probably have to raise prices at
that time. These prices include a discount for list members. Please email
me for information on shipping, code location, payment, etc. Hope I've
answered all the questions.
