Jeanne, I don't know how to fix it -- but I can tell you how to find it. The lifting frame has knee joints in the middle. With the top raised, look inside the back of the joints -- there's a cable attached at the top of the inner member which extends down into the lower leg. On mine there's just a bit of slack when the top is fully raised. As you bend the knees, the cables pull on springs (I dunno compression or tension) inside the legs, and resist the bending motion.

Mine pops up a little when the latch is opened, but it's still a hefty shove to raise it. But on the way down it comes by itself until it's about 12-18 inches up, then I start alternately rolling the canvas and pulling the top down until it's three or four inches up. Then a sharp pull down and it's latched.
