Could it just be the alternator belt slipping?

The battery light on the dashboard remains lit until the >accelator is depressed. Does this sound like the beginning of an >alternator going bad?

Possibly but I'd check the tension on the belt first or maybe try a dry lube stick on the belt (but that'll only reduce the squeaking). The first signs my alternator showed when it was going bad last year was the light occasionally coming on at high revs (briefly) when accelerating thru the gears. Finally it just stuck on and the message was clear enough.

But of course,YMMV.
