I thought I should post a followup to my last message about the possibly incorrect pinion bearing in my Vanagon trans. According to Speedway Volkswagen, the current pinion bearing part # is 091-311-219A for the Vanagon trans, and this is also the same bearing used in 72-79 buses. Dealer price is $324. I can get it at BowWow for $167. Autospiel charged me $238, and would have got it from BowWow for somewhat less than $167, maybe $120-130.

So it appears that Autospiel actually knows more than the parts supplier (BowWow) when it comes to which bearing to use.

I am quite disturbed that Autospiel now says that he would be willing to fix the oil leak (presumably caused by a failed seal) under warranty, yet he will not fix a failed bearing under the same warranty. This seems somewhat strange, since both parts carry a 6 month warranty which is now expired.
