Preamble to these instructions:
I've never done this on a Vanagon, but on a 914 and a 412, both of which
used the same motor and (I assume) the same AC.

1) Prepare to curse.
2) Remove heater blower duct from in front of cooling fan, remove fan
grill, and remove cooling fan.
3) At this point (if VW is smart) you can feed the belt through the hole to
the pulley. IF VW is dumb, proceed as below.
4) Remove alternator and heater blower.
5) Remove two rearmost pieces of cooling tin.
6) Remove four nuts securing cooling fan housing, and pull housing rearward
enough to loop belt around pulley.
7) Re-assemblage is the reverse of dismemberment.

Hello from Atlanta Ga.....I need to replace my fan belt to my Mini-York a/c
compressor.... How does one get to the crankshaft pulley to hook a new belt
on it???  Thanks!
