Just did this on my '87

Yes - you do need to elevate the front.  I drove mine
up onto some car ramps.  KenWilfy has a pretty good
write up on his website.

The only thing he (and RBentley) left out is that when
you replace the tank, the plastic hose that runs
across the top of the tank needs to go OVER the shift
linkage and coolant hoses.  Really a PITA to do.  I
used a floor jack & 2X4 brace to hold it while trying
to put t-fittings back in their grommets.  If you
don;t you won't go far because you can't shift ;)

While you are under there, replace your fuel filter.
Check the tank for rust, and the expansion T's for
brittleness or cracking. Check all gaskets, and
expansion hoses, and expansion tanks for crud buildup.
