I can only tell what I have on my 1983.5 and that may relate to your 81
speedometer. I have three solid orangish-red marks plus an orangish-red
dotted line at 65 mph. The below that one is at 55 mph. The first three
lines represent the shift points from 1st to 4th gear. For instance in 3rd
gear when I go beyond 55 mph at about 60mph the governor kicks in and the
engines start to cut out. This is to prevent people from over-revving their
engines. I believe that last 65 mph mark must represent what was, at the
time in 1983, the maximum legal speed in California. It sure isn't its' top
speed. <G>
