It depends what air cooled manual you use. THe air cooled Vanagon engine (1980-83) is a type4 engine, same as 1972-79 Bay window buses and the infamous VW 411/412. The Wasserboxer is a type1 engine, same as all Bugs and older type2s. So, the manual for the 80-83 is no good when it comes to the engine.

The Haynes 1983-1990 manual shows the rebuild, yes.
