First and formost INSTALL the thermostat. Second, move to the air-cooled list. Type2@type2.com. They know everything you will ever need to keep your Vanagon in top runnung shape. Please don't listen to the people who say..."I've seen plenty of air-cooleds with out the thermostat or flaps installed...No problem.." It will create LOADS of problems, from premature wear(and I mean lots of it) to poor operation. The engineers at VW knew what they were doing. And BTW, unless you live in an extreamly arid, hot climate, the thermostat does cycle. Keep it the way it was susposed to be, and remember, if the t-stat and air flaps were not needed, VW would not have spent millions of dollars to design them in. Beckett
