For those who believe that VW is a stupid company; for those who believe that VW extravagantly adds functional parts that aren't necessary; if you believe you are smarter than VW's German engineers who persisted in putting that 'un-important' thermostat on the type 2 engine for 14 years, feel free to leave your thermostat off.

For the rest of you, your thermostat brings your heads and (more importantly) your oil up to operating temperature within minutes, increasing efficiency, lubrication, and longevity of the motor. The reason you see "a lot of type 2 motors without the thermostat" is that a lot of VW mechanics are shade-tree engineers, who think they know more than the graduates of Europe's finest engineering schools.

Removing the thermostat on an air cooled motor is just as dumb as it is on a water cooled motor, but there again, I'm not an engineer, what do I know?

This really isn't necessary. The thermostat on an aircooled engine only opens and closes a flap to help the engine warm up faster. When warm, the thermostat does nothing. Its not like a watercooled, where the thermostat continually is opening and closing.

My recommendation is to do nothing. I've seen many, many bus engines without the thermostat.

What kind of problem are you experiencing that you think is related to this?

Hello all, Upon furthur inspection and discussion previosly I discovered my vanagon did not have a thermostat installed. Believing this may be a problem I was wondering what parts I would need to get this working and quantity of each. Bus depot parts include Thermostat, Washers, Pulley, screw (#), Sealing Washer, bracket, cable, and union nut. Just wandering if this would do the job?

Thanks Jay 80 Vanagon
