You can stitch it up by hand and then put iron on patches on both sides,
just have a helper hold a pad on one side for you.  Scotchgard will work
pretty well, but clean the top first.  If the canvas is very weak from
years of UV exposure, it may be time to replace it.  When I took the
canvas off of a '68 I once had you could push your finger through the
canvas it was so deteriorated.  See http://gowesty.com for some
