Nate, I've never done this, and until now, I thought all the Vanagon Westies had
the skylight.  But have you ever looked at a Westy pop-top that came with the
skylight ?  It has a lip that rises up inside the skylight like this very rough
character sketch (I hope it comes out in the font you get):

This means that a stock setup doesn't have to have full contact to keep water out
since water won't go up (unless winds force it).  Also, the top has recessed
gutters to either side from the light to run rain away.  If your top is molded
this way (maybe the skylight was optional in 83 ?), then it might be doable.
Otherwise, you might have a hard time preventing leaks.
