I just replaced my shocks and springs in the front. While apart, I decided to replace the control arm bushings (upper and lower) and when I looked at the ball joints, I found that both lowers had cracked boots and a bit of play. I went ahead and replaced all four (top and bottom).

My suspicion is that since the lowers require a lot more labor (and a hydraulic press) they are not replaced during regular preventive maintenance by typical owners. As a result, they are subject to excessive wear once they get to be the age of our Syncros.

Just a theory.
