An '85 GL pod went into my '84 with no discernible change in gauge readings. But the checking procedure in Bentley specifies a setting of 560 (on their magic resistor box) for empty on '80-'84, and 320 for '85-up. Full setting is 50 for all. Now of course Bentley never makes a mistake (koff, koff) but maybe someone could measure their sender at empty and full (resistance to ground, that is). Or just measure the gauge resistance with power off. Numbers from '84-'86 would do to begin -- if no change could work up year by year.
