A solution of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide as purchased from the drugstore or supermarket will work quite well. Use gloves, mask off carpet with paint dropcloth. Exposure to skin, hair or other pigment will lead to bleaching. Apply till bubbling stops. If bubbling stops, all active microbes are oxidized. Don't get near eyes, other critical bodily orifices, etc. If you have a fresh cut, or other unrecognized epidermal openings, the short term results could be disquieting. That is be careful, use intrinsic sentient mammalian sense. I use it to clean the fridge, water system plumbing, water holding tank and instruments for exobiology that need to be cleansed of various earthly contaminants.

Hope this helps,

Frank Grunthaner
