Typically, I'd agree with you. However, a couple years ago, cruising down the freeway with two cousins, two dogs and my wife, the oil light did just that: it was dark enough that it did stand out, and my action to the side of the road was quick. The cause was determined to be a clogged screen in the sump: one of the vw techs at University VW said he'd seen a few cases like this, but I still don't know why it clogged. He had some magic elixer, put it in, cranked it enough to pump the stuff thru the screen but not any further, drained it out, oil, run for a short time, drain, been fine ever since (we did put more oil in).

Again, typically I'd agree on the low rpm stuff, but you really need the oil light to come on whenever necessary. At speed, the damage will happen that much faster.
