Brett,

I'm sure you have heard all about the fan belt fixes, but here is my
take on some of the symptoms if it is not the belt.

Can you identify the location of the squeaking from the alternator?
If it is from the front (the side with the pulley) or the rear, it
may be as simple as replacing one of the bearings or both bearings.

If you get a red light it may be the brushes are worn out and need to
be replaceds as well. That could be your squeak if you are down to
the wire with the brushes.

The Bus Depot sells the brushes and the rear bearing all for about
$14 and relatively easy to fix yourself if you are mechanically
inclined.  The front or pulley side bearing, you will have to get
from a FLAP and it may run up to $20.


You can also get a used Jetta alternator from a junk yard, change the
pulley with the Vanagon one and install that as a replacement.
