My Westie (84) does this from time to time... I suspect it is a bad motor causing too much load... what I did is install two additional LED on the instrument cluster. One (yellow) that comes on when the fan turns on and one (red) that is attached to an OR gate that will come on when the fuse to the fan has popped...
