I have had some customers complaining to me about rebuilt AFMs for the Vanagon. I don't sell these myself but they buy them elsewhere, and then call me when they can't figure out why their vans are still not running right (I wish they would call me first :). Anyway the best thing to do is to test the AFM per the Bentley manual even though it is rebuilt or even new (sometimes these parts are out of spec). The latest one had the Temp I sender out of spec on it. Put in another rebuilt one that had the right readings and all was well. I have the 2.1l Vanagon AFMs new for $120 and the 1.9l AFMs new for $295 (yes Doctor, they are Bosch and have been blessed by the VW priests:). I can also get the aircooled ones new (I don't know the price off the top of my head). Give me a call if you need the troubleshooting chart from the Bentley (I can fax it to you).
