I disagree, the WBX fuel injection has been DE-tuned along with the cam being too mild.

From my research, the cam profile is similar to the T1 beetle engine.

I talked WebCam into making me a larger cam profile (It took several phone calls) for my 2.1L WBX project. The profile is still small when compared to profiles used in T1 engines that make similar or more HP (smaller sized T1 engines make more power than the WBX engine makes stock).

On my 2L T4 project, I used a 914 mild racing hydraulic camshaft with dual 36 mm Dellortos, I was getting @20 mpg, when I increased the carbs to 40 mm, the mileage went to almost 30 mpg.

The power comes in @3800 RPMs on the Digifant ECU, on the New chip the power comes in @3100 RPMs. The fuel pulses are longer, the timing pattern is different. The approach to the chip is to make it rich then lean it out opposite to the VW ECU where it is lean then enriching to keep it running.

Before I have talked about increasing the fuel pressure from stock did not have any effect, well I was wrong. I had no effect because I did not have a functioning O2 sensor. When I increased the pressure, the power increases and the mileage did not decrease. I discover this in an attempt to track down a vacuum leak. When I was checking my fuel pressure, I discovered that it was not responding as it should due to vacuum leaks. I have discovered that the air runner seals are cracked and leaking.

I have learned a lot more about the interaction of all the FI parts. If one part is bad, it often masks another bad part.

All this to say that there can be and is "instant Horsepower" increase when the limitations imposed by the ideas that VW engineers have on "how much power a driver needs" is overcome with parts designed to overcome the design limits. There are a LOT of JUNK parts out there that simply do not work or are cheaply made and will not last, I know because I have either tried them or considered trying them. BUT I also know that there are many good parts made well, do what they say and will last a long time.

With regards to increasing the power in the WBX engine there are many reasonable and sensible power increases that can be done that will fix problem areas of the engine- 2.1L rods breaking due to crank flexing, the engine has a longer stroke and thus increased deflection of the crank causes the rods to be cocked sideways and after time they break- counter-weighting the crank keeps the crank from flexing and reduces the chance of premature rod failure due to crank flexing, plus the bearing life is extended.

Increase the engines ability to get air into and out easier to free up HP.

These and other changes from the "Stock Form" increases both power and longevity of the engine.

The WBX engine is a DE-tuned racing engine, making some minor changes will bring out the power that is hidden within.
