Subject: more on gas cap keys

I have checked at the last 3 VW shows I attended, and it does appear that in '86 VW changed the gas cap to use the ignition key on all models. This is not reflected in any key application chart I have seen. I have forwarded the information to key manufacturers and publishers of key references for corrections. I appreciate everyone on the list who corrected me. Apparently early Vanagons (pre '86) used a short key (my '84 does.) Syncros and '86+ models used the ignition key. Non-dealer aftermarket caps I have found all use the short key. I've not found an aftermarket syncro cap to check. Replacement late model caps from the dealer are sold uncoded (without wafers or springs) and must be coded to the correct key . I've also not found a glove box using the ignition key. Last week I spent half a day in wrecking yards researching this, so I feel pretty sure about it all, Thanks for all the information, everybody. Just when I think I have all the answers, somebody changes the question! Steve Sandlin www.steveslockshop.com '84 Wolfsburg Westy '79 Transporter '00 New Beetle
