I found that many Audis use the same after market filter model as a Vanagon
(Fram, NAPA, etc.).  Of course the list has discussed the use of these brands
with a consensus that they are not desirable.  I have always used a VW/Audi
brand filter designated either an '86 Audi 5000CS turbo or a '93 Audi 100
(Same filter).  The Audi filter is the same spec as for a Vanagon filter but
the Audi's has an internal valve which Im told holds more oil in the filter
after shut down.  This is intended to help restore oil pressure more quickly
at start up.  I know my 86 Vanagon has been more quiet at start up since I
began using the Audi filter.  Also, the filters often come with a "nut"
molded to the bottom for installation/removal with a standard socket instead
of the clunky oil filter wrench.

I use NAPA or Valvoline (same oil!) 20/50 for summer use and winter storage.

BTW listees... nobody ever responded to my posting titled "86GL-questions on
