In this case all the connections are made at once, unless you start pulling pins out of the switch connector (maybe a good idea).

Actually, the way this circuit is wired, a short to ground in any of the three motor supply leads would probably blow the fuse in all positions. A shorted motor would likely do the same. I think your options here are either physical inspection of the system, or using an ammeter with a current-limiting resistor (or else an ohmmeter that can measure well below an ohm, not all that common) to see which path draws the most current, then use the schematic to analyze the results. A one-ohm resistor would limit the current to about 12 amps max; a two-ohm resistor would bring it into the 10-amp range of common electronic multimeters, and would let you squeak by with a 5-watt resistor, although 10 would be better. Circuit looks like this:
