Subject: Fridge switch mod
Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII

I have a 91 Canadian Westy syncro. My fridge has a switch panel for AC, DC & Propane inside the fridge door, next to the gas & temp dials. The switch is designed so that when one pushes one button, it pops the other buttons out so as to switch from AC-DC-Gas. My switch was stuck on AC.

A few months ago I took the switch panel out and dis-assembled it. I thought I had fixed (super glued) the problem and I posted the fix to the list. Well, the "fix" lasted about 2 months and then the same piece inside the switch broke again.

I again searched around to all of the Web places and Dometic and the vanagon list etc. but I could find no new or used switches.

So I have tried to "fix" it again. This time I removed the switch housing from the bracket and installed three toggle switches for AC-DC-Gas. I had to recess the switches and cut about 1/4 inch from the end of the toggle switch so that the fridge door would close, but after some filing the toggles look OK. The new toggle switches are in the same hole that the original switches were in, so it is not too ugly.

The only drawback to this "design" is that it is possible to have more than one switch "on" at a time and blow a fuse (BTDT already). The original switch was designed so that only ONE switch could be 'on' at a time.

Thanks for listening. Malcolm
