Subject: gas cap key, who needs it?: Vanagon keys--the answers
Comments: To: Scott Grillo <scottgrillo@COMPUSERVE.COM>

During the first week I owned van I forgot the special key to the gap cap. I was 200 mile from home.

Luckily (by the Grace of God?) wiggling my ignition key in the gap cap lock EVENTUALLY opened the cap. Phew!! After pumping the gas, I stuffed a rag in the gas hole (NC solution) and pulled to a parking space at the gas station, where I dis-assembled the cap lock, and removed all of the tumblers from the lock.

Now, I don't have to have a special key, in fact any key or similarly shaped item will work. The cap looks the same and no one knows the difference...except the 850 of you, and anyone around the world who reads the archives. "Hey, I thought I filled up yesterday???"

Hate to contradict an expert, but my '90 has a common key for ignition and gas cap, and it's not a Syncro. I would guess all late models were this way. My '85 had a separate key.

Thanks for the info though Steve
