As a GPS guy, I find them loads of fun and invaluable on trips or in unknown territory.. A moving map display is the only way to go in the van. This can be done one of 2 ways. Get a cheap receiver and use a moving map on a laptop for display, or a moving map on the GPS display itself. The laptop solution is a beautiful display with voice. I find it a PITA. I opt for a moving map on the GPS itself. If hiking you don't need the moving map.

All of the GPS units that I know of work off a 12v auto power system.

The GPS units people are fitting in cars: do these run off the car's power, or are they battery-operated? I'd find one useful both in the van (speedo) and out (locating geological localities). Maybe I need one of each.

Andrew
