I towed a 1979 GTI home (150km) with my Double Cab and it was accomplished using a U-Haul tow dolly that went under the front wheels. Starting and driving was no problem - perhaps a little sluggish, but STOPPING was a different situation! With no brakes on the towed load, it took a long time to stop. Since then I have found out what I did was illegal as it went over the maximum allowable towed un-breaked weight for a Vanagon. I'd do it again for a short distance, in the evening with no traffic where I can take my time, but never again for more than 20km. Towing a Transporter with a Diesel Golf... nope I'd never do it!
