They work great -- they let you know right where the cliff edge is as you drive over it. On the same road we would have a railing of wavy-section (stiff longitudinally) steel 2-3mm thick and a foot high, two feet off the ground with a 4x6 or so steel I-beam post about every fifteen feet. The end might very well be protected by a bunch of plastic 200-litre drums full of water or sand so you couldn't spear yourself on it.

You can drive through 'em, but you have to work at it. Of course your method saves expense, gives a much more attractive (and impressive...) view, weeds out the unfit, and doesn't dent the car as it goes over the side. <g>
