I thought this was understood by now but I guess not. All 86 and newer Vanagons and Syncros came with a common key for all locks but the glove box. This includes the gas cap, so only one key is all that is needed if you never lock the glove box. When I bought a new gas cap for my 87 Syncro the VW dealer asked for a copy of my ignition key so when I picked up the new gas cap it was already keyed the same as everything but the glove box.
