I've disassembled the gas cap on my '87 Westy many times for cleaning and
lubrication. Simply push out the metal pin located at the end of the cap which
fits into the filler tube. It's spring loaded and may be kinda snug so it might
take a little effort to push it out. After that, all the pieces are easily
separated.
