While I wait for my new ring & pinion set, I am still pondering the choices for gear oil on my Vanagon trans: Redline MT90 (GL-4) $15 /liter Pennzoil GL-5 (dealer/repair shop standard) $cheap VW synthetic $28 /liter Amsoil makes several gear oils which claim to meet GL2 thru GL5 specs by using a sulphur free EP additive. Price is about the same as Redline, and would presumably offer great EP protection for the R&P hypoid gears, while still avoiding the corrosion issue with the syncro rings. The only thing which is not explicitly stated is whether it addresses the "friction modifiers" to improve syncro engagement that Redline uses. Has anyone explored this avenue? Does Amsoil shift as well as Redline?
