VW is using 0w30 synthetic oil in all its 2000 model vehicles that have the oil monitoring system in europe. In a synthetic this viscousity has enough film strength that is can provide the protection of something like a 10w40 oil, while flowing very well. At startups you get instant oil pressure and protection. No matter the temp outside. It also will improve fuel economy by a small amount. Just like the new energy efficient tires...every little bit helps eh.
