I just had the tranny on my syncro rebuilt along with a new clutch, new clutch master and slave cylinders, and new starter. The van is now ready for its next 120K miles! I had a very positive experience with the mechanic that did the R&R (Dan at Louis Foreign Auto in Seattle) and with the tranny rebuilder (Daryl at AA Transaxle in Duvall WA). I highly recommend either of these gentlemen for their respective services. Daryl warrantys his rebuilds for 3 years and I had the misfortune of having to use the warranty when the initial rebuild was noisy (whine in lower gears). Turned out the new mainshaft bearing he installed was bad. Daryl went beyond the terms of his warranty and paid for all of the labor on the 2nd R&R. Vanagon owners in the Seattle area are fortunate to have guys like Daryl and Dan to keep their Vanagons alive and well.
