Thanks to all who responded. I swapped out the power steering belt for a new
one. While it was off, I also removed the alternator belt and used Ken
Wilfeys hints to check it and the water pump for wear. There was only a
slight noise from the alternator (still original), but seemed to be quite a
bit of play in the water pump (second one, with 95K miles on it).
Are there any warnings before the water pump goes?
