Scott,

I did this a couple of weeks back, except I used 3.5" Blaupunkt speakers. I
tried to get the original VW speakers out of their housings without exerting
too much manhandling but I got nowhere. Then a light bulb went off and found
an easy way.

Using a glass eyedropper and MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone)  I encircled the
speaker's base and then let the solvent dissolve the bond between the
speaker and the enclosure. After 30-45 seconds, using a screwdriver blade
for side twisting leverage, I dislodged the speaker from its' base channel.
It was somewhat similar to opening a can of paint. You could use any strong
solvent such as Acetone or lacquer thinner. Just be careful not to squirt
too much fluid since you don't want excess solvent leaking through the
plastic grill to the front. That stuff "eats" plastic so you only want to
direct it at bad plastic.
