I thought about the heat problem too in terms of a Corvair transplant. Why not substitute an oil cooler for the heater core? It may take awhile, but it would eventually get plenty hot, unlike the stock heat exchanger. You could go with a block heater to keep the oil warm during the cold months. It would work with less modification of your dash.
