Paul, I have just done the replacement. Mine wasn't squealing, but it was making other noise besides just being old. You can disconnect the hose from the plastic tube, up by the overflow tank, and you won't lose more than a cup of coolant. Put a container underneath to catch it and you can put it back in. I have never had to bleed the system doing this. Have the new one ready to go on and the system won't be open very long. As far as the noise and the belt being stretched, are you using the right size belt and how long has it been on there? Mine is a '90 Westy and I used a Continental belt AVX 10X1075 LA, VW P/N 023-903-137A.
