Karl, You have the solution. A shunt in the loop via a 3-way, 2 position valve with the CORRECT flow pattern will accomplish what you want. I checked for one but, I couldn't find one quickly with hose barbs. Surely, they are made. There is nothing wrong with using a threaded valve with hose bard adapters; it's just not as svelte.

Another way is to use 2 stop cocks. That is even less svelte but accomplishes the same end. One problem with this hookup, which a 3-way circumvents, is that someone not familiar with the valving arrangement may inadvertently shut off the loop.
