Supposedly you should have an SD709, which was most commonly used from '87 on. However, I have come accross some late 80's Vanagons with SD510's, even though the fiche does not show this. The compressor will have a number plate on it. Otherwise, you can identify an SD709 by the fact that it has the hoses going into a plate on the back with a bolt between them, whereas on a 510 the two lines attach at two completely distinct points on the back of the unit.
