I'd like to add that the Previa, although probably alot more reliable than many vanagons, is probably alot worse in a crash situation. I know people who sold their Previas instantly after seeing the crash test results on it which were quite bad. I've not seen any official crash tests of the Vanagon, but the ones I've seen on the web were quite impressive. The Toyota was just scary. This is what prompted them to so drastically change the vehicle's design for the new model which is in no way similar to the Previa other than saying Toyota on it.

Totally off topic, but I watched Motorweek yesterday and the new Volvo V70 (wagon) with an automatic transmission and the T-5 (big turbo) option scored a very impressive 6.2 0-60... and with all that safety equipment on board, it has to be the safest family car ever made. If you have 40k to spend that is :)
