I'm reminded of the early electric industry in this country. Every power company designed their own lamp socket so that you had to buy your lamps from them. Eventually everyone got tired of this hoohah and settled on the original Edison medium base. But when I was a largish child my mom's cousin in NYC could still take her bulbs to Con Edison and swap them for free, because according to some bizarre theory they were selling "light" and not "power."
